The Interview

Things have been a little bit quiet here on the Feltbug blog, but there has been all sorts going on behind the scenes. In September I decided to apply to do an MA in Fine Art at Camberwell College of Art. This was thanks to a friend who told me that places were still available even though the course was about to start and encouraged me to apply. It took me a couple of weeks to write my proposal and gather my work together. Luckily thanks to blogging and flickr my recent work has all been documented and recorded which made the application process much easier. I applied, got an interview, was offered a place and started 3 weeks ago. I am still reeling from the last few weeks. I have wanted to do an MA ever since I left college 27 years ago, so to have finally got in is a dream come true.

Thankyou to everyone who has always been so encouraging both here and on flickr. It has made a huge difference to my creative life to have this platform to share ideas and also to find inspiration from so many wonderful people from around the world.

Shoe designer Tracey Neuls has opened a new shop on Redchurch Street near Brick Lane in East London.

Designers Faudet-Harrison are to hold their first joint exhibition of new objects at the Tracey Neuls Design Shop. For London Design Week Faudet-Harrison have been invited to alter, amalgamate and redesign a seris of objects in a way that they could only do. Previous design alterations are so clever and effortless; for example, a matchbox where one side of the slide drawer is empty, serving as a place to put the spent matches.

Hand felted garments by Barbara Keal to be worn/displayed as sculpture on purpose-built stands. Taking the desire to connect with the natural, animal world as a point of inspiration, the colours and textures of Sussex wool and alpaca fleece become eared or antlered hats and cloaks which evoke a beautiful, wilder, hairier existence.

Following its successful integration into the London Design Festival last year, Origin: The Contemporary Craft Fair will return to Old Spitalfields Market from 22-28 September 2011.
Origin offers a rare opportunity to see and buy a diverse range of high quality, original craft from over 200 makers in one convenient location. Disciplines range from ceramics, furniture, metalwork and glass, to fashion accessories, jewellery and knitwear. Entrance fee is £10.

Fine Cell Work

'Love in' workshop

On 22nd September, Fine Cell Work hosts a stitching session between 4 and 6 pm with Fine Cell Work volunteer at HMP Bullingdon and Karl, an ex offender who spent time at HMP Bullingdon demonstrating some of the intricate skills that Fine Cell Work prisoners learn. Participants will make a charming ‘love’ inspired pin cushion . There is more information here.

Canadian artists Matthew Feyld, Jaret Penner and Michael Swaney are exhibiting at Gallery Steinsland Berliner in Stockholm, Sweden until 23rd September.

'They are fun and straight, yet thoughtful calm and poetic. Their stories revolve around characters in what may have started out as a depiction of reality, but in the end became something entirely different. Or if possible the other way around. The imagery is a modern version of traditional folk art, full of life, movement and color, varying from simple, unadorned, and a myriad of details.'

Tadek Beutlich 1922-2011

The wall hanging pictured is courtesy of Vision Gallery and Liz Hankins who let me know that Tadek died recently.

Tadek Beutlich is best known as an weaver of extraordinary tapestries but he also produced some large and very striking prints, most printed in the 1960s and 70s with editions Alecto. Originally from Poland he also studied in Germany and Italy before graduating in textiles from Camberwell School of Art and Crafts in 1950. He subsequently taught at Camberwell from 1951 to 1974. You can see a selection of his prints at Emma Mason british prints.

I attended the Best of British Design Open Call at Liberty's in London yesterday with my suitcase of Hand-Cut & Drawn cards. The event is an opportunity for designers and makers to meet buyers for Liberty, show their wares and get some advice and possibly be selected to sell work in the shop at a later date. I arrived at 11.00 and managed to avoid the queues which had built up from 7am. I met 2 buyers and had 3 minutes to pitch my product. They liked the cards and gave me some constructive advice about how to present them and suggested I return for the next open call in August.

I was inspired by Cathy Cullis' project to create a head every day and decided to give this a go myself. I started drawing on the 1st of January. Nine days was as far as I got. This has been a good way of galvanising me to produce work on a regular basis and although I stopped drawing every day I have continued to produce work on a more regular basis. Cathy is continuing to delight us with her tiny head project which is now on day 39. You can see her collection of heads here. Amazing!

Last evening I was having a smoke with artist Matthew Rose outside his one-man show at The Orange Dot Gallery in Bloomsbury and Rose was telling me that all of his work was about being scared but also about being fresh. "It's a love story, with scissors and glue".

Matthew Rose is an American artist who has been living and working in Paris, France for the last 20 years and his current show features an intriguing mix of collage, found objects, paint and glue. Oh! And a pair of scissors... It is an engaging show in a beautiful gallery space just around the corner from the Foundling Museum. You can download a copy of the poster here.

The Orange Dot Gallery, Continental Stores, 54 Tavistock Place, London WC1. Open Monday-Saturday 11am-5pm. The show continues until 31st October 2010.

The Renoir Cinema

The Bloomsbury Festival has just ended, I visited the area yesterday and saw a couple of exhibitions, including Threads of Feeling. As I was leaving the Foundling Museum I spied the Renoir cinema through the trees of Brunswick Square. A lovely place to watch a movie.

A bunch of 4 ribbons narrow – Yellow, Blue, Green, & Pink’. Silk ribbons tied in a bunch with a knot. Foundling number 170. A girl admitted 9 December 1743. Given the name Pamela Townley by the Foundling Hospital. Died 1 September 1746.

Threads of Feeling. The Foundling Hospital's textile tokens, 1740-1770.

The Foundling Hospital textiles consist of 5,000 small swatches of fabric dating from the middle decades of the eighteenth century. They are pinned to the registration documents that recorded the entry of each baby to the Hospital. These fabrics were kept by the Hospital as a means of establishing an identifiable link between the child and its mother. They now comprise the largest collection of everyday textiles surviving from the eighteenth century in Britain.

The exhibition continues at The Foundling Museum, 40 Brunswick Square, London WC1 until 6th March 2011. Entrance is £7.50.

Louise Bourgeois was reportedly a notorious hoarder. The artist, who died this year at the age of 98, accumulated all manner of tablecloths, napkins, clothing and bed linens — a lifetime’s worth of material, really — which she began to cut up and reassemble into “drawings” in the mid-1990s. Louise Bourgeois: The Fabric Works is an exhibition at the new Hauser & Wirth gallery at 23 Savile Row, London W1. The exhibition space is spread over 2 galleries with seperate entrances so don't miss seeing both spaces. There are over seventy fabric drawings made between 2002 and 2008. Curated by Germano Celant, there is a comprehensive publication to accompany the exhibition published by Skira. Closed Sundays and Mondays the show is on until 18 December.

I went to a workshop organised by Kaleid Editions and led by artist Jonathan Ward at The London Art Book Fair today and made my first artists' book. It was such an inspiring workshop.
A very happy day. I will post some more pictures of the book once it is finished.

The London Art Book Fair is at the Whitechapel Gallery 24th-26th September. Held on two floors of the gallery, 90 publishers, rare book dealers, galleries, magazines, universities and small presses present their latest books. There are also talks, workshops, book signings and films. All in all a very inspiring place to visit and entrance is FREE.

Origin, the London craft fair has moved from Somerset House to Spitalfields market this year. I was lucky enough to win a ticket to last nights private view on Claire Loder's blog. It was a lovely evening with lots of inspiring things to see and people to meet. Thankyou Claire! The fair continues until 29th September and the entrance fee is £10.
