Beyond The Frame

For the exhibition Beyond the Frame at Orleans House Gallery, 18 artists were asked to select a work from the London Borough of Richmond arts collection. I chose the explorer, ethnographer and translator of Arabian Nights, Richard Burton and his fencing shoe. I made a sculpture of a leg, using a vintage French stocking, embroidering an image of Richard and his wife Isabel engaged in a fencing bout.

proof

I am taking part in an exhibition this weekend in Brixton, there are approx 40 artists showing work from Camberwell College of Arts.  The MA I have been studying is entering its final few months, it has been a great experience although there has not been much time for blogging or updating my work on the web.  It has been an intense time of thinking, making, listening and talking. I have met some really inspiring people and will miss the wonderful library and facilities when the course finishes. The show is at Brixton East. 24-27 May 11am-6pm.

Louise Bourgeois

Louise Bourgeois, loose sheet, c. 1959: 27.9 x 21.6 cm. LB-0464; Louise Bourgeois Archive, New York, © The Easton Foundation.

Louise Bourgeois at The Freud Museum, 20 Maresfield Gardens, London, NW3 5SX until 27 May 2012.

Louise Bourgeois: The Return of the Repressed will show original documents from the artist’s recently discovered psychoanalytic writings, as well as drawings and sculptures, in the house of the founding father of psychoanalysis. Following its first showing in Latin America, the exhibition has been re-imagined for the unique setting of the Freud Museum London, which was discussed as a venue by Louise Bourgeois before her death. Appropriately, in the final home of Sigmund Freud and his daughter Anna Freud, this exhibition will explore the artist’s complex and ambivalent engagement with the theory and practice of psychoanalysis.

Funky Pretty

Funky Pretty, originally uploaded by matthew feyld.

Canadian artists Matthew Feyld, Jaret Penner and Michael Swaney are exhibiting at Gallery Steinsland Berliner in Stockholm, Sweden until 23rd September.

'They are fun and straight, yet thoughtful calm and poetic. Their stories revolve around characters in what may have started out as a depiction of reality, but in the end became something entirely different. Or if possible the other way around. The imagery is a modern version of traditional folk art, full of life, movement and color, varying from simple, unadorned, and a myriad of details.'
