An arm and a leg

Welcome back to the world of the blog. I missed you. So many social media platforms lack substance and are difficult to navigate. I thought it was time to embrace slowness again. The work pictured spans a period of 7 years. The arm was inspired by my daughter growing up and leaving home (an ongoing project) and the leg is the finished article that I made for the exhibition in the previous post, 2 years ago, just before the pandemic hit.  I studied for an MA in fine art for 2 years part-time 2011-2013. When it ended I found it very difficult to make work again. The best thing about it was meeting so many inspiring people, and finding spaces to make work in outside the normal gallery walls. I feel like my creative life is a series of interruptions which then have to be overcome in order to find the space to create again. The interruptions are stronger than the will to make the work. Maybe the spaces are ok, the work still comes out in the end. Gestational art maybe.
I am going to be updating my flickr page with images of work that I have been making over the last few years. I decided to keep my original blog, circa 2007 so some of the links on the side bar might be out of date, I will be updating them as I go.

Beyond The Frame

For the exhibition Beyond the Frame at Orleans House Gallery, 18 artists were asked to select a work from the London Borough of Richmond arts collection. I chose the explorer, ethnographer and translator of Arabian Nights, Richard Burton and his fencing shoe. I made a sculpture of a leg, using a vintage French stocking, embroidering an image of Richard and his wife Isabel engaged in a fencing bout.

proof

I am taking part in an exhibition this weekend in Brixton, there are approx 40 artists showing work from Camberwell College of Arts.  The MA I have been studying is entering its final few months, it has been a great experience although there has not been much time for blogging or updating my work on the web.  It has been an intense time of thinking, making, listening and talking. I have met some really inspiring people and will miss the wonderful library and facilities when the course finishes. The show is at Brixton East. 24-27 May 11am-6pm.

The Daily Project

Day 10 of The Daily Project. I am enjoying this task that I have set myself, to make a card every day.  Lots of other projects to think about too! Here is a selection of cards sitting on the line waiting to be packaged up. It feels good to finally open an etsy shop too.  I hope your New Year is going well.

Injector

Day six of The Daily Project and also twelfth night which sees the opening of the Feltbug shop on Etsy.  I signed up for this shop six years ago, I can't believe it has taken so long!  I plan to sell my hand-made cards, up-dating the shop on a weekly basis and maybe some other bits and pieces in the future. Happy New Year!

The Daily Project

A new year always brings a feeling of new beginnings and this year I have decided to see if I can draw a card a day for the next 365 days with the plan to put them into my etsy shop.  I will be uploading the first batch this Sunday 6th January which also happens to be twelfth night.  I started a daily drawing project 2 years ago and lasted 9 days so lets see if I can keep this one going!

Handmade & Bound

This time last year I was a visitor to this delightful book fair, with promises of more information about some of the things I saw there.  This year I will be taking part.  I have been busy working on my MA this year, hence the silence here. I am looking forward to returning to blogging to share some of my creative adventures soon.  The fair is on Sunday 18th November.  More details can be found on the Handmade & Bound website.

A BIG THANKYOU!

The Interview

Things have been a little bit quiet here on the Feltbug blog, but there has been all sorts going on behind the scenes. In September I decided to apply to do an MA in Fine Art at Camberwell College of Art. This was thanks to a friend who told me that places were still available even though the course was about to start and encouraged me to apply. It took me a couple of weeks to write my proposal and gather my work together. Luckily thanks to blogging and flickr my recent work has all been documented and recorded which made the application process much easier. I applied, got an interview, was offered a place and started 3 weeks ago. I am still reeling from the last few weeks. I have wanted to do an MA ever since I left college 27 years ago, so to have finally got in is a dream come true.

Thankyou to everyone who has always been so encouraging both here and on flickr. It has made a huge difference to my creative life to have this platform to share ideas and also to find inspiration from so many wonderful people from around the world.
