Julia Lohmann

Ruminant Blooms, preserved sheep's stomachs. 2008

Julia Lohmann uses unexpected materials to create magical pieces, engaging with contemporary issues. Her Ruminant Bloom lamps are made from preserved sheep's stomachs each with a unique structure. Her work is part of the Origin Intervention series which continues until Sunday in the Pavilion at Somerset House as part of the Origin craft fair. Looking through Julia's website I loved her series Growth Cocoons.

Skin

Skin: surface substance and design by Ellen Lupton. This was published alongside an exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design museum in New York in 2002. Ellen Lupton contributes to the following blogs, Design Your Life and D.I.Y. Kids
This book is mainly about surface in design but it draws on analogies of anatomy which I found inspiring. This is where I found the Marcel Wanders vase and there are a couple more pieces I would like to share with you. The cover of the book shows a design for fabric called Bumps, 2000 by Bullen, Pija Designs Ltd. The book is punctuated throughout with beautiful photographs by Elinor Carucci.

Gemma Anderson

(c) Gemma Anderson

I saw some wonderful work by Gemma Anderson at the Royal College of Art end of year shows last week.

Fireworks Night

A Black Eye (excerpt)
So I find a Cherry for you to eat up and you swallow the pip and I start to laugh.
Say a tree it will grow down in your stomach and new trees will grow from the fruit that falls from it.

Chloe King designed the cover for this CD by Fireworks night - I got this purely for the cover and was pleased to find the music was good too !

My heart belongs to Frida

Heart 2006, tapestry weaving, stuffed with wadding and backed with fabric.
I studied tapestry weaving at Morley College last year with William Jefferies. The weaving was inspired by this Frida Kahlo painting. It took almost 6 months to complete.

Wellcome Collection

The Wellcome Collection has opened this month in London. Sir Henry Wellcome (1853-1936) was an entrepreneur, philanthropist, patron of science and one of the world's greatest collectors. He was fascinated by anthropology and the history of medicine. The museum will be staging themed exhibitions providing insights into the human condition. The first one is The Heart.

I visited the museum today and my heart was most enraptured by what I saw ! I have a bit of an obsession with matters of the heart anyway so to wander round this unusual and varied exhibit was blissful. Not only are there numerous artifacts and artworks but there is a great selection of contemporary art including work by Ana Mendieta and Annette Messager.

Ailsa Ogden
