A cautionary tale

Edward Vine

On my way to the shops I always walk past the house of Mr Vine. This house with its red and white enamel sign has been here as long as I can remember. Ted Vine celebrated his 100th birthday recently and I took this picture of his front window, showing pictures of him through the years. He was born in this house and continued to live and work here, repairing and selling bicycles from his front yard, I was always on the lookout for a new bike, they were usually priced at £26.50. Sadly a few days after I took these photographs Ted Vine died. I went along to pay my respects as he made his final journey from his house in a horse drawn carriage.

Letterpress Love

SORT had a great collection of blocks for printing and this is the notebook I printed with my name. I hope to do more letterpress some day - it is a very beautiful art. I love the way the letters and images are embossed in the card.

Dreams on Wheels

Dreams on Wheels - Embassy of Denmark United Kingdom: For devoted or even those less passionate and occasional cyclists, Dreams on Wheels presents a view of contemporary urban cycling culture and examples of what can be seen and more importantly experienced in London and Copenhagen. For those of you who are yet to experience your city on two wheels, it will give you a chance to reconsider your options for daily commuting and leisure time.

Dreams on Wheels aims to get more people cycling around their city. It surveys best practice from Copenhagen and London, from cultural habit to innovative industrial design and city planning.
The London version of Dreams on Wheels is part of the prologue to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009. Previously, other versions of Dreams on Wheels have been shown at the Danish Design Center, Copenhagen and internationally in Canberra, Edinburgh, Riga, Paris, Toronto, Tokyo and Moscow.

The exhibition is at London City Hall, The Queen's Walk, London SE1. Open Monday-Friday 8.30-5.30 until 2 October. The bicycle is from Condor cycles

It was a really wonderful day at the London Skyride - over 65,000 cyclists of all ages and everyone with a smile on their face, we had exceptional weather and I even found the lovely people from London Cycle Chic at the end of the day, having missed our rendezvous. I have never experienced a bike jam of its kind before!

If you love anything bicycle related with a history, Rob Sargent's wonderful shop Sargent & Co 74 Mountgrove Road, Finsbury Park, London N5 2LT is the place to go. I visited in the Summer when his tomatoes were in full bloom.

The IDEALE saddle

I found this beautiful old French Ideale saddle at a market - it is a very beautiful object but rather uncomfortable. It takes a while to get used to a new saddle so I think I will stick with my lovely Brookes saddle for this Sunday's London Skyride. I am meeting a group of lovely lasses and lads from London Cycle Chic dressed in all sorts of non-lycra finery :) You can read more about the event on their blog.

Bicycle <3

I bought myself an old fashioned Dutch style bicycle - I have always wanted one of these - ever since a trip to Amsterdam in the early 8o's. Having no front brake and only a back-pedal brake is taking a bit of getting used to but it is a joy to ride.

Sasja Saptenno

In Holland, there are approximately 16 million people and 13 million bikes. Multiply the number of bikes x 2 and you get a rough calculation of at least 26 million inner tubes.

What happens to all those inner tubes when they are beyond repair? Jewelry designer Sasja Saptenno has found a creative way for people to accessorize with them! Sasja obtains her materials from bike shops, neighbors, and even off of her own bike!

The hazards of owning a bicycle

I spotted this rather nice old green bicycle outside the library - tied to the handlebars a luggage label with beautiful script that begins with the word Beware and then goes on to list several defects including a broken rear brake and 3 0r 4 loose spokes but ends on a very positive note saying ages since I rode it, have fun and take care. I didn't notice the sign in the background warning of bicycle thieves. All very dangerous. To recover from such nonsense I recommend you watch this video :)
