Tracey Neuls

Shoe designer Tracey Neuls has opened a new shop on Redchurch Street near Brick Lane in East London.

Designers Faudet-Harrison are to hold their first joint exhibition of new objects at the Tracey Neuls Design Shop. For London Design Week Faudet-Harrison have been invited to alter, amalgamate and redesign a seris of objects in a way that they could only do. Previous design alterations are so clever and effortless; for example, a matchbox where one side of the slide drawer is empty, serving as a place to put the spent matches.

Barbara Keal

Hand felted garments by Barbara Keal to be worn/displayed as sculpture on purpose-built stands. Taking the desire to connect with the natural, animal world as a point of inspiration, the colours and textures of Sussex wool and alpaca fleece become eared or antlered hats and cloaks which evoke a beautiful, wilder, hairier existence.

Following its successful integration into the London Design Festival last year, Origin: The Contemporary Craft Fair will return to Old Spitalfields Market from 22-28 September 2011.
Origin offers a rare opportunity to see and buy a diverse range of high quality, original craft from over 200 makers in one convenient location. Disciplines range from ceramics, furniture, metalwork and glass, to fashion accessories, jewellery and knitwear. Entrance fee is £10.

Fine Cell Work

'Love in' workshop

On 22nd September, Fine Cell Work hosts a stitching session between 4 and 6 pm with Fine Cell Work volunteer at HMP Bullingdon and Karl, an ex offender who spent time at HMP Bullingdon demonstrating some of the intricate skills that Fine Cell Work prisoners learn. Participants will make a charming ‘love’ inspired pin cushion . There is more information here.

The White Pencil

The D&AD White Pencil is awarded to a creative idea that changes the world for the better.
For the inaugural White Pencil Award, D&AD is partnering with Peace One Day. In 1999, filmmaker Jeremy Gilley founded the non-profit organisation Peace One Day to document his efforts to establish an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed date of September 21st.

Origin, the London craft fair has moved from Somerset House to Spitalfields market this year. I was lucky enough to win a ticket to last nights private view on Claire Loder's blog. It was a lovely evening with lots of inspiring things to see and people to meet. Thankyou Claire! The fair continues until 29th September and the entrance fee is £10.

London Design Festival

The London Design Festival is on until 26th September. This delightful poster is from the Victoria & Albert Museum which is at the hub of the festival this year.

LASSCO

In my search for a coffee sack to make into a cushion, I ended up at the website of LASSCO, a resource for architectural antiques, salvage and curiosities. I wish I had seen this exhibition at their showroom, Brunswick House which was on during the London Design Festival. Super Squat featured installations by 5 designers including Bodo Sperlein. Wonderful!

Chair Poetics

Ralph Ball and Maxine Naylor reconfigure ordinary, everyday chairs to ask questions about our relationship to utility, familiarity, obsolescence, sustainability and value. This exhibition is part of the London Design Festival and it is on at England & Co, 216 Westbourne Grove, London W11 until 30 September.

James Plumb

I wish I had seen the work of James Russell and Hannah Plumb aka James Plumb at Tent, their website is lovely. I saw this on the Haute Nature blog.

Knit Wits

We visited Knit Wits at Skandium, were taught to knit by Claire Platt and offered tea and cake and then on the way home we saw this giant crocodile on the District Line. A lovely end to the festival. There was lots more I wanted to see but it was difficult to get around everything in one week.

The Everyday Life Collector

The London Design Festival ended yesterday, I managed to get to a couple more shows. This was lovely, one man's life collection of ceramics, Richard Lamb.

Letterpress Love

SORT had a great collection of blocks for printing and this is the notebook I printed with my name. I hope to do more letterpress some day - it is a very beautiful art. I love the way the letters and images are embossed in the card.

The Incidental

Send them your reviews, news and updates via twitter, text, photograph, sketch or blog post. You can also visit them at their HQ at 5 Cromwell Place, South Kensington, SW7 for the duration of the London Design Festival.

Society of Revisionist Typographers

Another event which is part of the London Design Festival is the pop-up letterpress studio of the Society of Revisionist Typographers , SORT, which is located in the Newburgh Quarter off Carnaby Street. The shop will be there until Sunday 27th September. All the workshops are fully booked but I did get the opportunity to print a notebook. It is a really inspiring place and well worth a visit. If you are not in London you can purchase items of Typographic beauty from the SORT etsy shop.

Dreams on Wheels

Dreams on Wheels - Embassy of Denmark United Kingdom: For devoted or even those less passionate and occasional cyclists, Dreams on Wheels presents a view of contemporary urban cycling culture and examples of what can be seen and more importantly experienced in London and Copenhagen. For those of you who are yet to experience your city on two wheels, it will give you a chance to reconsider your options for daily commuting and leisure time.

Dreams on Wheels aims to get more people cycling around their city. It surveys best practice from Copenhagen and London, from cultural habit to innovative industrial design and city planning.
The London version of Dreams on Wheels is part of the prologue to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009. Previously, other versions of Dreams on Wheels have been shown at the Danish Design Center, Copenhagen and internationally in Canberra, Edinburgh, Riga, Paris, Toronto, Tokyo and Moscow.

The exhibition is at London City Hall, The Queen's Walk, London SE1. Open Monday-Friday 8.30-5.30 until 2 October. The bicycle is from Condor cycles

Knit wit with Iittala

For London Design Festival 2009 Skandium is partnering with Barley Massey of Fabrications, East London. Barley Massey and ‘Knitty Gritty’, a collection of inspired knitters, presents ‘Knit-Wits’ a collection of iconic Iittala products that are dressed in knit and displayed at Skandium on Brompton Road and Marylebone High Street. These witty and irreverent creations are one-off designs that are available to buy. Some may be completely covered up, but perhaps you will still recognize the iconic Iittala design? Thursday 24th-Sunday 27th September.
