Market Coffee House

If you are in Spitalfields this is a great place to stop for some light refreshment. The Market Coffee House, 50-52 Brushfield Street, London E1. They have a flickr site too.

This lovely signage is painted on the building next door to the cafe.

Ray Johnson

Raven Row’s inaugural exhibition is the first large UK show of the collages and mailings of New York artist Ray Johnson (1927–1995). Johnson used radical means to construct and distribute images, inadvertently inventing the ‘mail art movement’. He made art out of social life – both real and imagined – gathering celebrities, the art world, and friends into his work.

Raven Row

Raven Row is a new non-profit contemporary art exhibition centre in Spitalfields that is open free to the public, Wednesdays to Sundays. It has been constructed within eighteenth century domestic rooms, onto which 6a Architects have added two contemporary galleries, and it stands on the part of Artillery Lane that was known as Raven Row until 1895. I visited the gallery last week, their opening show is a retrospective of work by American artist Ray Johnson. It is a truly wonderful show in a very beautiful setting.

Word to Mother

Lost For Words is the latest exhibition by Word To Mother, the show ends on Sunday. It is on at the Stolen Space gallery, Old Truman Brewery. You can see the full set of works here.

The hazards of owning a bicycle

I spotted this rather nice old green bicycle outside the library - tied to the handlebars a luggage label with beautiful script that begins with the word Beware and then goes on to list several defects including a broken rear brake and 3 0r 4 loose spokes but ends on a very positive note saying ages since I rode it, have fun and take care. I didn't notice the sign in the background warning of bicycle thieves. All very dangerous. To recover from such nonsense I recommend you watch this video :)

Liz Arnold

Mythic Heaven, 1995
Liz Arnold 1964-2001 has a retrospective of her beautiful, quirky paintings at Camden Arts Centre, Arkwright Road, London NW3 until 19th April. Her carefully crafted canvases depict cartoon-like animals seemingly imbued with human emotions. They inhabit a world that is both fantastical and familiar.

Spring Equinox

Friday was Spring Equinox. Also known as Vernal Equinox, the day celebrates the renewed life of the Earth and marks the point when day and night are of the same length. Equinox means equal night and vernal comes from the Latin word for bloom. There are signs of new life down on the allotment this week.

Antony and the Johnsons

Antony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light. Photograph of Kazuo Ohno by Naoya Ikegami 1977.
"My new album The Crying Light is dedicated to the great dancer Kazuo Ohno. In performance I watched him cast a circle of light upon the stage, and step into that circle, and reveal the dreams and reveries of his heart. He seemed to dance in the eye of something mysterious and creative; with every gesture he embodied the child and the feminine divine. He's kind of like my art parent."

Cameo

Here are some new ideas I am working on for brooches, it has been lovely to start stitching again after a long absence. The book was a recent find at the car boot. It had quadrupled in price from 2/6 to 50p! Published in 1885.
