Through a glass darkly

I was looking at a kit for a camera obscura and I have always like the idea of pinhole photography so I have been trying to find a way to manipulate the digital camera without pressing any buttons. I used to have an old rolliflex which would have been good to use as a tool but as I don't know where that is I had to make do with a curved piece of glass held in front of the lens. I like the results. The last image is for lying down looking up. Take a look.
Through a Glass Darkly is an Ingmar Bergman film from 1961, the phrase is a quote from the Christian new testament, suggesting that humans have an imperfect perception of reality.

Red toenails and forget-me-nots

My friend Rik Snowley used to paint his toenails red in the Summer. One of his many little eccentricities which we loved him for.

Babybird

Babybird Five big brick shithouses playing delicate songs with puppy-soft fingers. They rock my world - wonderful music; complex, dark and so sweet too. This is one of my favourite albums and I love the cover artwork.

Recollect

Pilgrim's Progress by Max Jacquard

Many artists have in their studios, wonderful pieces of their own work that never see the inside of a gallery. These objects may be maquettes, experiments or just oddities that did not happen to fit in with a particular body of work going to an exhibition. They are often highly prized by their makers and valuable examples of their unique creative vision, hence highly collectable.
Koukan Gallery - the space for Art in Architecture, has invited a group of artists to dig through their archives to rediscover those special pieces that for some reason got overlooked the first time around. Seasoned practitioners working in Glass, Ceramic and mixed media sculpture have been invited to rediscover works that have a special place in their affections. The show represents an eclectic mix of small-scale artworks, wall mounted, each with its own custom made shelf or support; a hybrid between an R.A Summer Show and Wunderkammer where a profusion of diverse objects vie for the attentions of the viewer.

Recollect is curated by Matthew Durran and Max Jacquard‭, until 18th May at The Lotus Foundation, 16 Lancaster Grove, London NW3.

Hacker record player

Love this instuction - when playing fasten lid for good bass reproduction.

On the way home from the shops I spied this on the top of a skip, I managed to drag it out of the skip and balanced it on my bike. It is extremely heavy. The plug has been removed but I think it may be in working order.

Devendra Banhart

Rejoicing in the Hands by Devendra Banhart.

We Made This have put together a playlist, music to design by. This is my favourite album to listen to when working - especially good very early in the morning when everyone else is sleeping. Devendra Banhart also makes beautiful drawings. Have a look here.

1981

This is me in 1981 when I was 18 years old and had just completed my foundation art course at Hounslow Borough College. I was on my way to Maidstone College of Art to study printmaking. For the Flashback Friday pool on flickr.

Riflemaker

Opened in 2004 by collectors Virginia Damtsa and Tot Taylor, Riflemaker is housed in London's oldest public building, a Georgian riflemaker's workshop dating from 1712. Their aim is to exhibit the most ambitious and extraordinary work by the very best young and emerging artists of this era in this unique architectural space. Riflemaker has presented debuts by Jamie Shovlin, Francesca Lowe, Jaime Gili and Chosil Kil as well as themed exhibitions on William S. Burroughs, the Indica gallery - 'Riflemaker becomes Indica' - the Liliane Lijn/NASA collaboration 'Stardust', John Maeda's virtual exploration, 'Maeda/Myspace', Alasdair Gray and Francesca Lowe's 'Terminus' and an investigation of 'Voodoo: Hoochie-Coochie and the Creative Spirit'. 79, Beak Street, Soho, London W1.

Maurizio Anzeri

Magdalen 2009 21.5x16.5, embroidery on found photo

Round Midnight 2008/09 45x60cm, embroidery on paper

Ghost of a chance 2009, 220cm high, synthetic hair,threads

3 sculptures, 2009 synthetic hair, threads

Showing at one of the best galleries in London (in my humble opinion) Riflemaker gallery in Soho, Italian artist Maurizio Anzeri's life-size hair sculptures portray the human form as hollow sarcophagi. Anzeri (b. 1969 Loano, Italy) teases and spins hair into tightly-wove plaits and rolls, creating a body-bag of coiffured assumption.
The artist creates an additional classification system through needlework and embroidery, a second Anzerian semiology. In addition to the sculptures, found family photographs are reinvented with embroidered threads of colour pulled tight to create new facial contours. New expressions radiate from the eyes of strangers, needlework veils mask what was. The show continues until 26th May.

The Photographic Object

damage (glass) by Catherine Yass 2005

The Photographers' Gallery has moved from Covent Garden to 16-18 Ramillies Street, London W1. Their current show is The Photographic Object. The artists in this exhibition use stitching, cutting, piercing and punching to explore the ambiguous space between two and three dimensions. I particularly liked the work of Maurizio Anzeri who is also showing work down the road at Riflemaker gallery.
