Helene Uffren

Underground 2009 glass. wood, metal, photography.

Helene Uffren is one of the students exhibiting at the Royal College of Art this week, she makes very beautiful work that suggests a world of alchemy and illusion. The pieces were all about looking and seeing.
"Visual experiences mediated by different optical devices are at the center of my research. I focus on surface depth, distortion and illusion, to create extra dimensions through cropped vision. I want the viewer to become part of the work, pulled in and transported by the act of viewing.
The brain sees through the eyes, editing and creating individual realities. My optical devices act as portals to parallel realities and question the way we see. The essential ideas behind my current work revolve around the hyper-visual, hyper-real and over exposed world we live in …"
"What we usually call reality is a montage" Nicolas Bourriaud

Thrifted gilt.

A new Charity shop has opened near where I live and I found these 3 unusual objects. The hand is made of plaster and holds an object with a cross. The glass bottle looks like it could be Russian, I love gilded glass. The basket is a rucksack - the shape is just right for a new bag I have been planning to make out of felt. I went to see the creative basketry exhibition at City Lit adult education institute last week and I am thinking about joining the course in September.

Wire tales

Old wire dog muzzles found at the car boot fair in Chiswick today. I have always been drawn to things made of wire - I think it is the linear quality that I love. The feeling of drawing come to life. I was thinking of how I could use these in a sculpture but now they are on the wall - they are quite perfect as they are.

Glass by Annie White 2005 fused with copper wire.

3 glass figures by Annie White 2005. These figures are cast glass, with copper wire entwined inside the glass.

Annie is a wonderful glass artist - this is some of her work from 2 years ago. The copper wire leaves the most amazing residue on the glass from the heat of the kiln. Annie is currently a student and will be showing her new work later in the year.

Light in the afternoon

A photograph I took this afternoon with Matt Durran's glass sculpture in the foreground. In the background are some of my papier-mache sculptures with found objects framed in a crumbling plaster frame. You can find out more about Matthew Durran here
