American Craft

American craft magazine has had a makeover this month. It is full of goodies, with a photographic portrait of the home/studio of French artist Nathalie Lete, a wonderful article from the archives of Craft Horizons by Hungarian artist, Mariska Karasz (more about her next). The magazine has a new editor, Andrew Wagner and if this issue is anything to go by it is going to be something to look forward to every 2 months. They have chosen a lovely typeface developed by Johann Michael Fleischmann in the 1700s which has been updated by Erhard Kaiser of the Dutch Type Library in Amsterdam. I do have a weakness for good type! Somewhere I have been planning to visit is The Type Museum in Stockwell, London.

Janaina Tschape

I found the artist through Art Moco, a web magazine featuring modern contemporary art news, and views. It is a great resource with links to lots of interesting art.

Margaret Kilgallen

I first saw the work of Margaret Kilgallen on the cover of this graphic design magazine, print in 2003. The work of Kilgallen combines elements of graphics, folk art and typography in an irresistible combination.

Artistic nature

The latest issue of Embroidery Magazine is out. It features the work of Claire Heathcote and her portraits in thread. They are stunning works of art. Embroidery magazine, if you do not know it, is a great publication but it is not easy to find - as far as I know no shops in London stock it and the only way to get hold of it is by mail order or by visiting the Embroiderers Guild bookshop. If you are planning to do this I would telephone first to make sure the shop is open.

I went to the Embroiderers Guild bookshop at Hampton Court Palace to pick up a copy yesterday and saw this amazing tree with mistletoe growing all over it. Mistletoe is a parasite which grows off other trees. Nature does it again !
Signature 1999 by El Anatsui, photograph by Martin Barlow for Oriel Mostyn, Wales.
And here is another wonderful piece of work by El Anatsui, again featuring my favourite material - the tree. El Anatsui who is showing work in London at the moment, as I mentioned last month, also has a show in California at The Fowler Museum in Los Angeles until 26 August, this is a touring show organised by Oriel Mostyn Gallery in Wales.

Selvedge
The latest issue of the textile magazine Selvedge is out. There is an article about the history of Dutch wax resist fabrics in this issue. There is also a piece about a remarkable artist called El Anatsui - you will not believe your eyes when you see his work which is made from recycled aluminium bottle tops - he has an exhibition on in London at the October Gallery near Holborn until 12 May.

Selvedge

The Jurgen Lehl spring collection, illustrated by Hideaki Matsuura.
The new issue of the textile and design magazine, Selvedge is out now. I met their designer Rebecca Machin at the Contemporary Textiles Fair today where they had a stand. I recently discovered that they have an amazing book shop online - it is really worth looking at for inspiration. They have an eclectic selection of unusual books including the Telos series - which if you have not come across them - publish monographs of textile artists from all over the world.
